Achieving spiritual enlightenment isn’t all fun and games, you know.
It is a destructive process that peels away the pretenses and lies that we’ve constructed around ourselves.
It is the annihilation of everything our ego built for us.
It’s scary stuff.
And ultimately, blissfully fulfilling, once you get through the terrifying journey that is spiritual death.
But what is spiritual death? And why are we striving for it?
In this article, we’ll explain all.
Starting with…
What Is Spiritual Death?
Spiritual death is the first phase of our journey to spiritual enlightenment.
If you picture yourself as a noble, elegant phoenix—we have to burn you down before you can rise from the ashes in your true form.
Spiritual death is often referred to as the dark night of the soul.
It is the grinding down of our ego until it learns to work with the spirit. By experiencing spiritual death, we demote our ego and promote our infinite soul.
If you are going through your spiritual death right now, prepare to step into the cosmic miracle that is your true self—a miracle created from love, compassion, and authenticity.
So how do you know if you’re experiencing this right now? We’ll show you.
The Signs of Spiritual Death
You feel vulnerable
Feelings of helplessness, powerlessness, and loneliness are a sign that your ego is working overtime.
As it faces its death, it is doing everything in its power to scare you into surrendering your spiritual journey and getting comfortable again.
As human beings, we will do a lot to avoid pain—and our ego knows that.
You are doubting yourself
As part of the spiritual journey, you’re realizing how far short of reaching your potential you are.
This feeling of dissatisfaction is driving you forward, so hold on to it and welcome it for what it is—more fuel for your inner fire.
You are missing something
Your life might be great on paper, but you feel like you need something else.
Or you’ve achieved everything you’ve ever wanted, and you’re still not happy.
That’s because your spirit is crying out to be fed and watered and nurtured.
There is no job, relationship, or number in your bank account that can fill the yearning hole in your soul without this spiritual journey.

You are exhausted
The spiritual journey can be taxing—to the mind, the body, and the emotions.
If you are feeling drained on all levels, it’s because your spirit is going through a lot.
This takes energy.
Similarly, you may notice detox symptoms as you experience spiritual death—muscle aches, cramping, and flu symptoms.
You feel restless
While some of us feel like we’re wrestling a hangover, a cold, and post-workout muscle fatigue during spiritual death, others feel an abundance of nervous energy.
The ego is dying, which can be a great burden off your shoulders.
Often, we don’t realize the weight we are carrying until someone else carries it for us.
You are yearning for purpose
You may have had your life mapped out, but recently your goals have become stale and uninspiring.
As you embark on your spiritual journey, your spirit awakens to all the possibilities and yearnings inside you, waiting to be set free.
It is not uncommon for people to change their goals completely during their spiritual journey—as priorities shift and values change.
You have trouble sleeping
As you experience spiritual death, you may be plagued with worries and doubts about where you will go, what you will do, and what life will look like in the future.
Mindfulness and meditation can help to calm your frantic mind.
You should also take comfort in knowing that this rough patch will pass—and a whole new experience awaits you.

You gain perspective
All those worries you used to cart around? All those unhealthy coping mechanisms you used to control your spouse, manage your children, and deal with your work? You may start to realize them as what they are: unhealthy. They may even be downright dangerous.
Likewise, as you ease the pressure on your soul and give it some light and air, escape mechanisms like unhealthy foods, drinks, drugs, and damaging relationships tend to lose their shine.

You experience massive doubts
Early on in your spiritual death, you may find yourself questioning every move you make. You might be hyper-aware of what you’re doing, and struggle to come to terms with who you are now.
Try to see yourself as a newborn—fresh and bright and not too sure of this new world you’re in. How would you treat yourself? How will you build courage through this transformation?
The answer is simple: Be gentle. Be kind. Be helpful. You will get through this transformative journey to overcoming ego and letting your spirit sing.

Wow !!! Thanks for the enlightment. I'm 65, quit my job, a thousand dollars in the bank, gave up my apartment, now living with my grandson. Had plans to relocate to ATL, Ga but a week before departing my work bag was stolen with social security card in it. Wow!!! MUST BE STILL! There is SOMETHING God wants me do and I'm not going anywhere until it gets done ...God's will... not mine. The Spiritual Death was finally realizing he is in control. THANK YOU!!!
