Maya Angelou was an American poet best known for her memoir, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.
In 1959, she became the northern coordinator for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.
In 1969, Angelou published her first autobiography called ”I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.”
Maya recited her poem, “On the Pulse of Morning,” at the presidential inauguration of Bill Clinton in 1993.
Since 1999, she had taught at Wake Forest University at Winston-Salem. In 2010, Angelou was the recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
She died on May 28, 2014, in North Carolina. She was 86 years old.
